5 tips for getting and staying motivated
My friends over at MiHigh recently sent out an email with 5 tips for getting and staying motivated. We’re already into the New Year. This is that time where resolutions and goals find out how serious you are about them. Getting motivated is simple. Put on the Rocky soundtrack and start. Staying motivated after the music stops is another thing entirely.
Let’s take a quick look at MiHigh’s 5 tips for getting and staying motivated and then we’ll go a little deeper and see what can find to make sure we get the most out of the new year, hit our goals and actualize our resolutions.
MiHigh’s 5 tips for getting and staying motivated
- Identify Attainable Goals
- Keep Yourself Moving
- Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
- Be Intentional
- Find Time To Relax
Get and Stay Motivated Tip #1: IDENTIFY ATTAINABLE GOALS
If you don’t know already, when I’m not here doing the Rich Man’s Gym thing, I’m a 10X Training Facilitator and Coach with Grant Cardone. So keep in mind here that 10X is a multiplier of success. The 10X mindset is all about dreaming big and doing more. So if you haven’t set some monster goals for yourself, there’s no time like the present. And it’s simple. Take your current goals and multiply them by 10.
Now what? Well, what will you do today to get there? That 10X goal isn’t happening over night. Grant Cardone says his over night success took about 30 years. Your 10X goals won’t be any different. This is where you want to take MiHigh’s advice and identify attainable goals within the big goal. More specifically, what is attainable today?
Here’s an example: Lose weight this year.
Not a S.M.A.R.T. goal but a good one. S.M.A.R.T. goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time stamped. And so we going immediately upgrade this goal to lose 20 pounds by July 4th. Now if we literally 10X that, most of us will die. So how do we 10X that? Enter and finish 3 half marathons this year and finish one marathon next year. Do that and the 20 pounds are gone by by and you’re in great shape because to do this right you’ll need to get your nutrition dialed in, train for these things and let the 20 pounds come off as a consequence of the right behaviors which again will be the attainable things you do today such as getting your miles in everyday.
And it’s the daily wins that start stacking up to create the big wins. And speaking of that…
Get and Stay Motivated Tip #2: KEEP YOURSELF MOVING
Maybe running’s not your thing. So what is your thing? What physical activity do you enjoy doing? Currently I have an injury that is preventing me from running and heavy lifting. Doesn’t mean I take it easy or let myself off the hook. It means I get creative and find other forms of exercise that don’t exacerbate the injury and are still fun. For example, I can still ruck and have recently entered into a love/hate relationship with the box step up.
Bottom line here is moving daily. Before I start a workout, I love to warm up with Jumping Jacks and The Sun Salutation. It’s a great way to get started in the morning too. Find movements and exercises that push you, that are fun and invigorating. This will make you more motivated to train with frequency and stay engaged.
And on a side note, did you know that you can burn up to 300-600 calories per session in a MiHigh sauna blanket? That’s equivalent to a one hour walk. Also if you go train hard and are looking for a great way to recover well while burning off a few hundred calories, finish off your training session with 45 minutes in the sauna blanket.
WARNING/WORD TO THE WISE: This does not excuse you from discipline.
There will be days you’re not feeling like it. There will be days where your XBOX will be extremely seductive. You will have moments where you’re convinced you’re too tired or sore or whatever excuse your imagination is coming up with and the answer to those feeling is discipline and go get after it.
Get and Stay Motivated Tip #3: EAT WELL AND STAY HYDRATED
You will get out of your body what you put into it. If you’re looking to get and stay motivated, remember that food and your hydration levels will impact your mood and your state. That’s not something we grow out of either. Look at a kid on a sugar high or a sugar crash. Adults do this too. I know you just thought of an example!
And do you even know what your body needs to be healthy? I mean, have you ever looked in the mirror and thought… “I should be feeling better than this”? You’re not alone.

Get and Stay Motivated Tip #4: BE INTENTIONAL
Be intentional. What the heck does that even mean? Well, I think Steven R Covey put it best when he said, “keep the main thing the main thing.” What you focus on is what you create. Where your attention goes is where the energy flows. This is not new. You already know this. The real question is what will you do about it. Where is your attention going now?
Back to goals. Are you looking at them multiple times a day? Grant Cardone suggests that you write your goals down at least twice a day. When you wake up and right before you go to sleep.
What are you keeping top of mind? Because again, whatever you’re keeping at the top of your mind is exactly what you’ll being into your life. What you think and believe will become your reality so audit and adjust your thoughts accordingly.
Get and Stay Motivated Tip #5: FIND TIME TO RELAX
Here’s the quiet part out loud, muscle isn’t built in the gym, its built in the kitchen and in the bedroom. It gets broken down at the gym. If you are not getting adequate rest and nutrition like we talked about it earlier, you’re not going to reach your goals. Any of them. The body needs rest, the mind needs rest and the spirit needs rest.
Let’s take a look at the word recreation. The dictionary says, “activity done for enjoyment when one is not working.” Throw that out! Look at the word. Break it up. RE-CREATION. “re” means to go back. In latin it means to create again, renew. And this should be happening everyday. You’re body is going to do this on its own with out without you. The question now is, are you going to make it hard or easy on your body to do this.
These 5 tips for getting and staying motivated will make recreation easy.
When you set attainable daily targets that lead to your 10X goals, when you stay active everyday while eating right and staying hydrated your body; your intentional with your time and you get good sleep your body will have all the tools it needs to recreate the best version of you.
Which of these tips did you find most helpful? Which one do you need to do more of or do better? How are you recreating yourself on the daily? What can I do to help? Leave a comment with your key takeaways and what you’d like help with.
