The Tom Bilyeu Morning Routine

The Tom Bilyeu Morning Routine

The Tom Bilyeu Morning Routine

I saw Tom Bilyeu speak at the ChiroSushi Summer Camp in Las Vegas.  When the floor was opened for Q&A, I had one thing on my mind.  Tom is a very successful guy.  Success is no different than any other skill.  Understand and duplicate what the successful do and success will be yours as well.  Success isn’t a talent show, it’s a take the right actions at the right amounts show.

So with notepad in hand, I asked Tom about what his morning routine looks like and if you didn’t like him before, what he responded will either make that better or worse…

Tom Bilyeu doesn’t use an alarm clock

That’s right.  Not his deal.  Worse yet, he says he’s in bed by 9:30 pm.  HOLY CRAP!  Good news?  Yes.  Tom is also a BSU alumni.  BSU stands for Beat the Sun Up!  He’s letting his body be his alarm clock.  He said he gets up around 4 am.  If I was able to ask a follow up question it would have been how did you establish this and how long did it take to get into this rhythm?  Bottom line though, it is true that the early bird gets the worm and that to be right in the head, you need quality sack time.  Period.

Immediately Workout

Tom starts his day doing something he doesn’t want to, getting uncomfortable and pushing his limits.  How do you start your day?  And if you’re reading this here at Rich Man’s Gym, immediately working out means just heading out to the garage, down to the basement or the backyard and getting after it.  It is also not a requirement to train for hours on end…  Just move the body.

Meditate

Silence truly is golden.  There is so much noise out there and in there.  Our heads that is.  How valuable would it be to set aside 20 minutes a day to just be quiet and focus on your breath.  Tom mentioned he does box breathing.  You can get more on that in Mark Divine’s book, The Way Of The SEAL.

[Side note: I’ve struggled with anxiety in the past and have used box breathing as a way to allow the emotion and anxiety to flow though me instead of staying in me and spinning me up like a top.]

Thinkitate

This part, I loved.  He just spent 20 minutes kicking out the thoughts and now he’s going to spend another 20 on letting them flow in.  Then he writes it all down.  Believe you me, this one will be getting incorporated into my morning routine.  There’s an exercise I learned from Grant Cardone that I used to do and somehow set it aside and so I think it’s time to resurrect this and add it back into my list.

Questions to stimulate the thinkatation:
  1. List out as many people you can think of, who if they were part of your inner circle would change everything for you
  2. Make a list of five things that would most challenge you and do at least one before the day is up.
  3. Write down at least 5 ways you will go the extra mile today
  4. Come up with as many good deeds as you can think of that you could accomplish today and get 3 of them done before the day’s up
  5. List out all the different ways you could make a million dollars in 6 months

Read

Average American reads one book a year.  Average CEO reads over 50.  Coincidence?  Not really.  According to Forbes, CEOs of the 350 largest U.S. public companies now average $16,300,000 in compensation, while typical workers average about $53,000.  I’ll let you work that out on your own.  And before you interject time into the equation, remember we all have the same 24 hours in a day.  No time simply means you haven’t made it a priority yet.  Speaking of Grant Cardone, he says creativity follows commitment, so I’ll challenge you here to commit to reading a book a week and I promise that if you commit to that whole heartedly, the time will show up (Audible counts.  Drive time = learn time.  Turn off the talk radio and news bullsh*t #justsayin).

What about breakfast?

Isn’t that the most important meal of the day?  Humbug!  This isn’t the blog post for why that’s utter B.S. but let’s just say that there’s something to be said for hunger and it has to do with hormonal cascades and clearer thinking. Intermittent fasting, low carb and low sugar, high healthy fats, raw food, Paleo, Keto eating is the most natural way to get your calories.

A couple other nuggets to wrap this all up

Clearly, Tom is quite “selfish” with his morning.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.  You, like Tom, have to live with yourself for the rest of your life.  So if you’re spending the rest of your life with you, what kind of person do you want to be?  Tom doesn’t take a meeting until 10am.  From 4am to 10am, it’s all about Tom becoming a better Tom.

Tom has a list to keep him on point.  He has a Get Sh*t Done list.  This list has the most important sh*t that needs to get do to move the business forward.  Do you have a list?  If you did, would you be more focused?  Is your main thing, actually the main thing?

Last “little” thing that I’ll be working on figuring out somehow, is Tom believes that checking email is reactive and can very easily snowball you into unproductive activity.  For many of us, email is a necessary evil and a valuable form of communication.  The question you want to ask yourself when you feel the urge to check your email (or a social stream for that matter) is, “am I in control of my email or is my email controlling me?”  Would it make sense to perhaps schedule time to look at and handle emails?  For some that may not be real, but at what level of urgency is the email actually?  Just remember this, who’s in control of the email cycle.

Final thoughts

What did you see in the Tom Bilyeu Morning Routine that you will incorporate into your morning?  If you believe Google, Tom’s net worth is in the 400 million range.  Clearly, he’s doing something right.   This is your life.  This is your day.  When your in your twilight years, you will look back over your days and know exactly how and why you arrived here.  Each day stacks on the next to build your life.  You are building your life.  How much of this you do is up to you, but I’ll tell you this.  Successful people have a non-negotiable morning routine.  Have your own.  Make it about getting centered and focused on your day, your life and your targets.  Make it about self-improvement and personal development.  You find what works for you but by all means, start your day in control of your body, your mind and your spirit.
