Migraines Cured with Ketones?

Is it possible that there is literally a cure for migraines that “Big Pharma” would just rather not have you know about?  Meaning, if you just made this one switch, your chronic migraines would minimize significantly or better yet, just go away.  If you’ve ever suffered a migraine or worse, suffer from migraines on the regular, there may be a solution you haven’t tried.

A lot of folks have had their migraines cured with ketones.  In this post, we’re going to look at a few things.  First, in case you’re just tuning in, what are ketones?  Then we’ll look at a couple studies on how ketones have helped with migraines.  Lastly, we’ll look at a couple supplements to try to get ketones in your diet on the quick.

Migraines Cured with Ketones:  What the hell is a ketone?

Ketones are substances that are made when the body breaks down fat for energy.  Most people run on sugar.  More specifically, glucose.  When you run out of sugar, your body can break down protein to make more sugar, but eventually the body realizes that, that’s not such a good idea and then start to metabolize fat and the liver starts pumping out ketones to stand in for the glucose.

People who restrict starch, carbs and sugar to 25 grams or less per day and who consume plenty of healthy fats and a moderate amount of protein will enter into a state of ketosis, meaning the body is making ketones to use for energy.

That’s the basics.  The history behind this is that in the 1920’s, a ketogenic diet was found to be an effective treatment for people with epilepsy.  Structuring caloric intake properly while on a ketogenic diet and the body gets real efficient at using fat for fuel.  And why wouldn’t you?  You can only store about 500 grams of glucose, which is about 24 hours worth of fuel.  If you can teach your body to get back to it’s roots, you’ll get all kinds of great benefits beyond looking better naked.

Migraines Cured with Ketones:  3 Studies to Consider

Study ONE:  After a one month period, migraine sufferers who went on a ketogenic diet saw a 90% reduction in terms of attack frequency and drug consumption   (READ IT HERE)

Study TWO:  Twin sisters who reported suffering from 5-7 migraines a month lasting 1-2 days each, got on a ketogenic diet and within 3 days, migraines disappeared.  (READ IT HERE)

Study THERE:  Ketones help block the high concentrations of glutamate that are found in both people who suffer from migraine and people who have epilepsy. (READ IT HERE)

I read these so you don’t have to.  Lot of big words and gobbledygook.  You’re welcome to read them yourself, but prepare your eyes to glaze over…  unless you’re into the science, then by all means, enjoy yourself.

Migraines Cured with Ketones:  Getting into ketosis

So, there’s a couple ways to get into ketosis.  There is nutritional ketosis and there’s supplemental ketosis.  Me?  I do both.  Now, I don’t get migraines on the regular, but have had them in the past and I can tell you, they suck at the highest level.  In February of 2016, I made the commitment to limit my sugar intake to less that 25 grams a day.  Any carbohydrates that I get come from veggies, yogurt or nuts.  February started for me a full on ketogenic diet.  I incorporated MCT oil, started drinking buttered cofee, and dove right into it.  Almost immediately a few things happened.  More energy during the day, reduction in brain fog, better workouts, and better sleep.

In March, after about 30 days of being in nutritional ketosis, I added supplemental ketones to my diet.  I started taking Pruvit’s Keto//OS.  (read my 30 day review HERE).  What happened next blew me away because I went into Keto//OS with massive skepticism…  Massive.

So, here’s what happened though.  All the benefits of being in ketosis suddenly 10Xed.  Even more energy during the day and another drop in brain fog.  During workouts I was able to go even harder and longer.  Dreams got a little more vivid too.  Interestingly enough in the past when I did get migraines it was usually after an intense workout or exercise session.  Well, now, I’m going hard more often and have had a few headaches but nothing even close to a migraine.

Migraines Cured with Ketones:  Now What?

Should you try a ketogenic diet for your migraines?  If you’re considering it, you’ve got to make a decision.  Is it worth it?  Is it worth at least a try?  Here’s what I’d say.  What do you have to lose?  Bread?  Pasta?  Fruit Loops?  Can you sacrifice a little pleasure to eliminate a whole lot of pain?  Getting into this diet required a little self-discipline, commitment and some creativity but I did it.  I also found coconut butter.  OMG that stuff is good!

Keto//OS can help ease you into ketosis*.  In fact, it can you have you in ketosis in like 90 minutes or less.  There’s this thing out there called the ketone flu where your body goes through something similar to withdrawals – which should give you a massive red flag about consuming sugar anyway.  Keto//OS will ease the transition and help you become keto-adapted.  The decision to try the ketogenic diet, supplementing with ketones or like me, both, will be yours.
